COVID-19 symptoms

COVID-19 symptoms

People infected with COVID-19 may have few or no symptoms. You may not be aware that you have symptoms of COVID-19 as they may be like colds or flu.

Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to COVID-19. It is the longest known infectious period for this disease. We are currently studying whether the virus can be transmitted to other people if a person does not show symptoms. Although experts believe it is possible, it is considered to be rare.

Symptoms include:

breathing difficulties
pneumonia in both lungs
In severe cases, the infection can lead to death.

If you get sick
If you feel sick while traveling to Canada or arriving, notify the flight attendant, cruise personnel or a Canadian border services officer. They will decide whether to submit you for further medical assessment by a quarantine officer.

If you are sick and need to go to a health care professional, call in advance or tell them when you arrive that you have a respiratory illness. In order to prevent the spread of the disease, you may be asked to wear a mask while you are waiting or receiving treatment.

If you have traveled abroad and have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing within 14 days of:

isolate yourself at home as quickly as possible and
consult your health care professional or the relevant public health authority
Let them know about your symptoms and your travel history. Let them know if you have been in direct contact with animals or someone who is sick, especially if they have symptoms.

be ready
It is important to know how to prepare in case you or a family member becomes ill.

Coronavirus diagnosis
Coronavirus infections are diagnosed by health care providers based on the symptoms presented and are confirmed by laboratory analysis.

Coronavirus treatment
At this time, there is no vaccine for COVID-19 or any natural health product authorized to treat or protect against COVID-19.

The majority of people with mild symptoms will recover on their own. Your health care provider may recommend measures to relieve symptoms.

Consult your healthcare provider as soon as possible if:

are you concerned about your symptoms or
you have a history of traveled to an area where serious cases of coronavirus infection have been reported
The sooner you see your health care provider, the better your chances of recovering quickly.

Flu vaccine won't protect you
Although coronaviruses are a respiratory disease, these infections are not the same as those that cause the flu. If you have had a flu shot, it will not protect you from coronaviruses.

About coronaviruses
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some cause disease in humans and others in animals. Human coronaviruses are common and usually result in mild discomfort, similar to that of the common cold.

COVID-19 is a new disease that has not yet been identified in humans. In rare cases, coronaviruses that infect animals can infect people; even more rarely, they can be transmitted through close person-to-person contact.

There have been 2 other coronaviruses that have spread from animals to humans, and have caused serious illness in humans:

severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV)
Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (CoV-SRMO
